School Board Set to Vote on Major Improvement Projects

In Charleston County, the school district's finance committee recently met and backed a plan to revamp several schools. The committee voted to reallocate $14. 6 million from leftover funds of a one-cent sales tax program. This amount, part of a total $37. 4 million, will be used for five major projects. These include updating HVAC systems, renovating restrooms, and making parking changes at different schools. The district is one of the few in the state that can use these sales tax earnings to enhance school facilities and related projects.

The funding, primarily from tourism, helps reduce property taxes and debt. The projects were not initially part of the referendum but were added due to their urgency. "We need to explain to the board why these improvements are crucial for our students, " said Chief Operating Officer Jeff Borowy. He expects the projects to start in Spring 2026.
