Scotland’s Independence Champion, Alex Salmond, Passes Away Unexpectedly
Ohrid, North MacedoniaSunday, October 13, 2024
In 2019, Salmond faced charges of sexual assault and attempted rape, which he maintained were politically motivated. He was eventually acquitted. Post-acquittal, he started the Alba Party, aiming to push for another independence referendum.
Salmond’s background in medieval history and economics shaped his vision for an independent Scotland. He supported the creation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and later persuaded the UK government to hold the historic 2014 referendum.
Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum, including from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described Salmond as a “monumental figure.” Current SNP leader John Swinney praised Salmond’s contributions to Scottish politics.
Salmond’s legacy will continue to influence Scottish politics, particularly the ongoing debate about independence.
