Samsung has unveiled a new hardware‑based feature called Privacy Display that lets users keep their phone screens private without any stickers or protectors.
How It Works
Directional Pixels
The display uses special pixels that emit light only forward. In normal mode, wide‑angle and narrow‑pixel light blend to allow visibility from many angles.Privacy Mode
When activated, the wide‑angle pixels dim dramatically, leaving only the narrow ones bright. This makes the screen hard to view from the side.
Activation Options
- Quick Menu – Toggle on/off instantly.
- Automatic Triggers – Set to engage for specific apps, when a PIN is entered, or on notification pop‑ups.
Dimming Levels
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| Normal | Light dimming, still readable from a normal distance. |
| Maximum | Near‑complete side‑view obscuration; may reduce readability from a normal distance. |
Availability
- Currently available only on Samsung’s newest Ultra model, which features a 6.9‑inch screen, a powerful processor, and upgraded cameras.
- Samsung plans to monitor usage and may bring the feature to future devices if it proves popular.
Context
Samsung is the first phone manufacturer to incorporate this hardware privacy technology, though other companies are exploring similar solutions.
