Season Kick‑Off: Local Athletes Shine

The first week of spring sports in Shawnee County has already seen some impressive performances. Weather conditions have warmed, and teams are stepping onto the field with fresh energy. Voters are invited to choose this week’s standout player, as announced by Envista Federal Credit Union. Nominations are due at noon on Friday. If you know a local athlete who made waves, send their stats to Liam Keating via email or X. Brody Anderson from Seaman’s track and field team started the season strong. He pitched five innings against Gardner‑Edgerton, allowing just one run and four hits in a 14-1 victory. This game also marked Coach Jay Mastin’s 200th career win. Isaac Ansley, a senior pitcher for Washburn Rural baseball, mirrored Anderson’s success. He also threw five innings with one run and four hits in the same 14-1 win, contributing to a solid season opener for his team.

Carsyn Broxterman of Hayden soccer made headlines with five goals in an 8-0 triumph over Cair Paravel. She netted three of those goals within the first nine minutes, setting a high tone for Hayden’s season. Broxterman has committed to play college soccer at Kansas City‑Kansas Community College next year. Cianna Graves led Shawnee Heights softball with five hits and four RBIs across two games, helping the Thunderbirds secure 6-0 and 8-7 victories over De Soto. Her defensive play behind the plate was also a key factor in those wins. Harley Stamper, a junior from Topeka High baseball, dominated the early games. He combined for two hits and six RBIs in a 16-3 win over Highland Park, and added another hit and an RBI in a 20-1 victory. Stamper also pitched three innings, allowing only one hit and one earned run. Past winter winners have highlighted athletes from swimming, basketball, and bowling across the county.
