This week, skywatchers are in for a treat with the final supermoon of the year. On Friday, the moon will appear 14% larger and brighter than usual, making it a spectacular sight. The best time to catch this celestial show is around 4:30 p. m. , just before sunset. This event is perfect for New Yorkers, as they can enjoy the supermoon during twilight hours. Supermoons happen when the moon is close to Earth, within 90% of its nearest approach. This particular supermoon will be about 225, 000 miles away. While not the last full moon of the year, this one will be the closest to Earth before 2024 ends. Additionally, this supermoon is known as the beaver moon, marking the time when beavers prepare their dams for winter. Before the supermoon, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights on Monday or Tuesday nights.
