Semaglutide Meds: A New Hope for Knee Pain

Imagine having a drug that can cut your knee pain almost in half. That's what semaglutide medications, like Ozempic and Wegovy, are doing for people with severe knee osteoarthritis. A recent study found that these medications, originally designed to treat diabetes, can significantly reduce pain for those suffering from knee osteoarthritis. The study, which lasted 68 weeks, involved 407 obese participants with an average age of 56. Researchers tracked their pain levels using a 100-point scale.

Before starting the medication, participants reported an average pain level of 70. 9 points. By the end of the study, those taking semaglutide saw a 41. 7-point reduction in pain, compared to a 27. 5-point reduction in the placebo group. That's a nearly 50% reduction in pain! But how does this work? Semaglutide mimics the body's natural GLP-1 hormone. It helps patients lose weight and decreases inflammation by activating specific white blood cells. This double benefit is crucial because obesity puts extra pressure on knee joints, making osteoarthritis worse. Experts are excited about these findings because they offer a non-surgical option that's more effective than steroid injections or over-the-counter pain relievers, which can damage internal organs over time. While knee surgery is effective, it's also expensive. Semaglutide provides a promising alternative.
