Senate Leader Mitch McConnell Takes a Spill at Lunch

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, had a fall during the Senate Republican lunch on Tuesday. The cause and severity of the fall are still unknown. Two medical responders briefly visited his office but have since left. Newly elected Senate Republican Leader John Thune, who will take over from McConnell in January, was asked about the incident. Thune assured that McConnell was okay and in his office, but deferred further questions to McConnell's staff. McConnell's office hasn't released any statement yet.

McConnell has a history of health issues, including polio, which has caused him to walk with a limp. In March 2023, he fell at a hotel in Washington and sustained a concussion and fractured ribs, leading to a six-week absence from the Senate. He also had a couple of episodes last year where he seemed to freeze in front of cameras but was later cleared by the Capitol physician.
