Severe Weather Disrupts US Travel Plans Over Holidays

As one of the busiest travel seasons in the US kicks off, severe weather has already caused a buzz with hundreds of flight cancellations. Texas and Louisiana witnessed tornado warnings on Thursday, leading the Federal Aviation Administration to halt operations at two airports. Texas Governor Greg Abbott activated emergency resources in response. The National Weather Service anticipated hazardous conditions across various regions in the US around New Year's Day. By Thursday evening, nearly 800 flights were cancelled, with more than 90 cancellations on Friday and seven more scheduled for Saturday, according to Flight Aware.

Evan Bentley, a meteorologist, discussed the severe weather threat looming over east Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama for the weekend. Though details remain uncertain, Bentley warned of numerous storms with risks including hail, strong winds, and potential tornadoes. Given the holiday travel rush, Bentley suggested travelers in the affected areas should stay updated with weather warnings. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expected to screen nearly 40 million travelers between December 19 and January 2, with December 27 being a peak travel day. Meanwhile, AAA projected over 100 million people would be on the move between December 21 and January 1.
