The Problem

Parasites pose a significant challenge for sheep and goats, impacting animal health and farm productivity. Among the most notorious is Haemonchus contortus, a tiny worm that infests the stomachs of these animals. Farmers typically rely on drugs to eradicate these parasites, but the worms are evolving—developing resistance to the very treatments designed to kill them.

The Drug in Question: Eprinomectin

One such drug, eprinomectin, is particularly valuable as it is the only treatment approved for dairy sheep with no withdrawal period. However, reports from southwestern France indicate that its effectiveness is waning on some farms. To understand why, scientists collected worm samples from six farms.

  • Four farms had worms resistant to eprinomectin.
  • Two farms had worms still affected by the drug.

Additionally, two lab-grown worm samples, known to be affected by eprinomectin, were included in the study.

Testing for Resistance

The researchers tested all worm samples against four drugs:

  • Eprinomectin
  • Ivermectin
  • Moxidectin
  • Levamisole

Using a specialized test that observed worm movement, they determined resistance levels.

Key Findings

  • Worms from the four resistant farms showed resistance to eprinomectin.
  • Worms from the two non-resistant farms and the lab-grown samples remained affected by the drug.

This confirms that the test can reliably identify eprinomectin resistance, a crucial tool for farmers and scientists alike.

The Road Ahead

Despite these insights, many questions remain unanswered:

  • Why are the worms developing resistance?
  • Are there alternative drugs that can combat these parasites?
  • How can we prevent future resistance?

Scientists are actively investigating these questions. In the meantime, farmers are urged to use drugs judiciously—only when necessary and strictly following instructions—to slow the development of resistance.
