Showdown of the Stars

The 30th Critics Choice Awards kicked off Friday at Los Angeles' Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The event, delayed twice due to the devastating L. A. wildfires, is a big deal in the entertainment world. Chelsea Handler will host the festivities. Conclave, a Focus Features drama, and Universal's Wicked were the two movies with the most nominations. As the night began, Conclave won the first award for Best Ensemble. Universal/DreamWorks Animation's The Wild Robot won for Best Animated Film. Conclave and Wicked both have 11 nods, with Dune: Part Two and Emilia Pérez following close behind with 10 each. These nominations are a great indicator of what might happen the Oscars. An artful film like Oppenheimer. Conclave, Wicked, Dune: Part Two, and Emilia Pérez are all in the running for Best Picture. They are up against A Complete Unknown, Anora, The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, and The Substance in this category. All except Sing Sing are also nominated for the same award at the Oscars.

Shooting across to TV, FX's Shōgun leads the way with six wins. Shōgun won both Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress categories. This includes Moeka Hoshi starring in Shōgun for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Tadanobu Asano also won for Shōgun for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Shōgun didn't stop there. Jessica Gunning won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television for Baby Reindeer. Liev Schreiber brought another win for Netflix, in the category of Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television for The Perfect Couple. Hannah Einbinder brought the comedy, winning for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. Michael Urie won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Shringing. These awards matter because they set the pace for what might happen during the Oscars. A movie or show that wins here has a good chance of winning there. The Critics Choice Awards is a huge night for the entertainment industry. The event aired live in the east and tape delayed in the west. The show is a collaboration between E! and Peacock, with the Peacock premier on Saturday.
