Sicario's Gunplay: Realism vs. Entertainment

Denis Villeneuve, known for his sci-fi films like Dune and Blade Runner 2049, also dabbled in crime thrillers with Sicario. This 2015 movie follows FBI agent Kate Macer, played by Emily Blunt, as she joins a task force to fight drug cartels. Despite its box office success and Oscar nominations, an army firearms expert, Patrick McNamara, pointed out some gun handling mistakes in the film.

One scene in particular, a nighttime tunnel raid, didn't use illuminators on rifles, making the soldiers fire indiscriminately. This isn't typical for special ops who are trained to shoot accurately. Blunt's character also transitions from a rifle to a pistol after her rifle is hit, which McNamara found unusual. He rated this scene a six out of ten for realism, noting the gun techniques were average, not great. But how does this affect the movie's overall success? Sicario has a high score on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box office hit. Most viewers won't notice these inaccuracies, and a realistic feel is often more important than perfect accuracy. McNamara's insights, however, offer a fascinating look into the movie-making process and the balance between artistry and realism.
