Skokie’s Main Street Gets a New Look: $1. 8 Million Plan
The village board has approved a $1.8 million makeover for Main Street, selecting Copenhaver Construction after reviewing four bids. The project focuses on two blocks near Keystone, where sidewalks and plazas will receive fresh materials, new art spaces, plant beds, furniture, and longer curb extensions.
Key upgrades include:
- Regrading and drainage fixes
- New irrigation systems
- Updated street lighting
The city will combine a $600 k grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity with its current capital improvement budget.
Phased Approach
Earlier this year, the village hired MKSK Inc. to study Main Street’s five-block stretch from Crawford to Tripp Avenues. The resulting design plan covers the first two blocks, with plans to tackle the remaining sections in phases—ensuring local businesses stay open during construction.
Business and Resident Concerns

Village Manager John Lockerby explained that the first property to be acquired is a single storefront west of Keystone, already owned by the village. The long‑term goal is to purchase additional properties along the block and transform the area into a community hub. Negotiations will give the village priority if owners choose to sell.
Timeline
With board approval, construction can begin on the two-block corridor—though a start date is yet to be set. The entire project is projected to span over 20 years, as more properties must be bought and rebuilt. Officials anticipate that the fresh look will revitalize Main Street and spark broader renewal across Skokie.
