Slimming Down the Government: A New Plan for Efficiency
Wednesday, February 12, 2025
The government is also working on new rules to make sure that employees are suitable for their jobs. This includes making sure they comply with legal obligations, like filing taxes on time. This is to ensure that the government is hiring individuals who are trustworthy and responsible.
Moreover, the President wants to know if any government agencies or parts of agencies can be eliminated or consolidated. This could mean big changes in how the government is structured.
The President has given a deadline for these changes to be reported. The United States DOGE Service Administrator will need to submit a report in 240 days, detailing how the order has been implemented and suggesting any necessary changes.
Exceptions exist, of course. Military personnel are not affected by this order. Agency heads can also exempt certain positions if they are crucial for national security, homeland security, or public safety.
The government is moving quickly to implement these changes. The Director of the Office of Personnel Management has 30 days to start a rulemaking process that will include new suitability criteria for federal employees.
The order also clarifies that it does not create any new rights or benefits that can be enforced by law. It is focused solely on making the government more efficient.
So, what does all this mean for the average citizen? It means that the government is trying to work smarter, not harder. By cutting down on waste and focusing on essential services, the hope is that the government will provide better service to the public.
