Smart Glasses Banned from New York Courts
New York, USAWednesday, July 8, 2026
From July 20, the entire Unified Court System will prohibit any device capable of recording—whether a camera or microphone—from entering courtrooms. This includes all wearable technology such as glasses, headsets, and other gadgets.
The Office of Court Administration issued a memo explaining that the ban is designed to:
- Protect the integrity of proceedings by removing hidden recording devices.
- Keep witnesses focused on testimony, free from distraction or concern about being filmed.
- Address privacy concerns, preventing recordings from being shared outside the courtroom.
This move aligns with restrictions in other states that aim to limit recording equipment during trials. Critics argue it may reduce transparency, while supporters believe it eliminates distractions and upholds a fair trial.
The rule is already in effect. Lawyers, witnesses, and jurors should verify their gear before entering a courthouse.
