Smart Home Dashboard: Weather, Calendar and More
The SwitchBot Home Dashboard is a 7.5‑inch e‑ink panel that resembles a framed picture. It can sit on a two‑piece stand or stick to the wall with adhesive strips, and its USB‑C port is tucked below the screen so you can keep it plugged in without bending the cable. A 5,000‑mAh battery promises up to a year of use if you turn it off at night and keep it in bright light.
Design & Controls
- Single top button – lights the screen
- Back button – for pairing
- Four touch pads below
- First pad: opens a weather screen with time, current conditions, barometric pressure, wind speed and a six‑day forecast.
- Second pad: shows a schedule view that can display one to three days of calendar events pulled from Google, iCloud or Microsoft calendars via an iCal link.
- Third & fourth pads: act as smart‑home triggers, turning individual SwitchBot devices or groups on/off. They also read the panel’s temperature and humidity (response times up to ten seconds).
A small speaker on the back offers several alarm tones and decent sound quality for its size, allowing you to listen to the weather when you’re busy elsewhere.
Configuration via App
- Choose a simple weather view that drops technical details, or switch between metric and imperial units.
- Additional screens: hourly forecasts, weekly/monthly calendars, an AI‑generated daily weather summary, and a whimsical “daily verse” that talks about the day’s weather.
- Custom view lets you type text in the app, but pulling in dynamic data or AI agents requires scripting knowledge. SwitchBot says more flexibility may come later.
Verdict
If you only need a clear weather readout and a quick calendar glance, the Home Dashboard does that well. Its e‑ink display is low‑power and easy on the eyes, and it integrates with Matter for Apple HomeKit. However, users who want a richer app ecosystem might look at alternatives like the TRMNL, which offers a marketplace of plugins and more elaborate layouts for just a little extra cost.
