Soil Microbes: How They Handle Nitrogen in Lab vs. Nature
Agricultural SitesFriday, January 17, 2025
Surprise! The field method works, but outdoors, microbes use N a bit slower. Some microbes did better in the lab, while others shined in the field. Why? The better lab performers were opportunistic, while the field rockstars needed plant roots or intact soil. This study shows that tracking N use in nature is possible and has its own pros and cons.
Interestingly, when considering the number of each microbe, the lab and field results got even closer. This tells us that both methods have their place in understanding soil life.
