South African Afrikaners Find New Hope in the US
Washington DC, USAFriday, May 9, 2025
South Africa's foreign ministry has expressed regret over the situation, stating that the resettlement appears politically motivated. They argue that South Africa has worked hard to prevent discrimination since the end of apartheid. The country remains deeply unequal, with white people typically having 20 times the wealth of black people. The black unemployment rate is also significantly higher than that of white people.
The US Department of Health and Human Services will assist the South Africans with basic needs upon their arrival. This includes housing, household items, groceries, clothing, and other essentials. The Afrikaners will be resettled in various states across the US, some of which have family members already living there.
The situation in South Africa is complex. Affirmative action policies have helped create a black elite and middle class since the end of apartheid. However, most black South Africans still live in poverty. These policies, along with high crime rates, have led some white South Africans to feel like victims of targeted racism. It is a delicate balance, and the US's involvement adds another layer to the discussion.
