The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund is making significant strides in South Carolina's conservation efforts. They are on the verge of reaching a remarkable $5 million in donations to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). The latest grant, scheduled for 2026, amounts to $190,000. These funds are raised through private donations, events, and promotions.

A Legacy of Conservation

Established in 1981 following the passing of Harry Hampton, the fund honors a conservation pioneer. Hampton was instrumental in the creation of the South Carolina Wildlife Commission, now known as the SCDNR. His efforts also led to the designation of Congaree Swamp as a national monument, which is now South Carolina's only national park.

Focus on Education

The fund's primary mission is education, with a strong emphasis on youth engagement. They offer scholarships to students pursuing studies in wildlife, fisheries, forestry, and related fields. Additionally, they support law enforcement and journalism scholarships. Every dollar raised remains in South Carolina, funding programs that the SCDNR cannot support through state or federal funds.

Recent Contributions

Recently, the fund donated two cargo trailers to the SCDNR's law enforcement division. These trailers, fully enclosed, will transport equipment for SCDNR operations. The trailers feature colorful photos of hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities in South Carolina, along with QR codes linking to the Hampton Wildlife Fund's website.

Leadership Insights

BeBe Dalton Harrison, the fund's executive director, expressed pride in supporting the SCDNR. Alvin Taylor, the board chair, emphasized their commitment to standing alongside the SCDNR in educational endeavors. Jim Goller, a former executive director, noted the challenge of raising awareness about Hampton's legacy and the fund's mission. Despite these challenges, they continue to make a difference, one dollar and one scholarship at a time.
