South Korea's President Faces Arrest After Impeachment
South KoreaTuesday, December 31, 2024
Last week, the acting president was also impeached for refusing to fill vacancies in the Constitutional Court. This court is deciding whether to oust Yoon. Lawyers for Yoon plan to fight the arrest warrant, saying it's not a case of insurrection. South Korea's constitution stops the president from being prosecuted, except for rebellion or treason.
Two top military officials have been charged for their part in Yoon's power move. The head of Yoon's party thinks arresting a sitting president is not right. But the main opposition party wants Yoon arrested now. A finance minister is dealing with presidential duties until the court decides.
