Space Billionaire's Big Role: What's Next for NASA?
Washington, D.C., USASaturday, April 5, 2025
Isaacman has a impressive resume. He co-founded Draken International, a company that trains pilots for the U. S. military. In 2021, he financed and flew on the Inspiration4 mission. This was an orbital spaceflight on a SpaceX Falcon 9 and Dragon spacecraft. He has also bought three more SpaceX missions under his Polaris Program. The first of these, Polaris Dawn, launched in September. It included the world's first private spacewalk. The other two missions are still on the drawing board. One of them was supposed to be the first crewed flight of SpaceX's Starship. If Isaacman gets the NASA job, these missions might be put on hold.
Last month, 28 former NASA astronauts showed their support for Isaacman. They wrote an open letter to the Senate, praising his passion for space exploration. They believe he could bring new energy and purpose to NASA. However, some people are skeptical. They wonder if Isaacman's lack of government experience will be a problem. They also question his ties to SpaceX and Elon Musk. Only time will tell how these factors will play out in his confirmation process.
