In a recent announcement, SpaceX has snagged a significant win in the competition for military launch contracts. The Space Systems Command of the US Space Force has awarded the company eight launches, valued at a whopping $733 million. These launches are set to carry satellites for both the National Reconnaissance Office and the Space Development Agency. The competition for these contracts was limited to SpaceX and United Launch Alliance (ULA), with SpaceX emerging as the winner.
The missions will take place from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, starting as early as 2025. This marks the first firm order for rocket launches in what's known as Phase 3 of the launch procurement process. The Space Force plans to have around 79 missions in total for this phase, divided into two categories: Lane 1 and Lane 2. The awarded launches fall under Lane 1, which involves less complex missions into low-Earth orbit.
The Space Force has praised the industry for stepping up to meet the competition's demands. With at least 30 missions planned for Lane 1 by 2029, the focus is on launching numerous small satellites for the Space Development Agency. These satellites aim to detect and track enemy missiles, and relay crucial warning data to military units.
