Speedway Sports Complex Shifts Focus to Pickleball

Lincoln, Nebraska, USAMonday, July 6, 2026

The indoor arena at 315 Speedway Circle, which opened in 2018, is set to transform most of its basketball courts into a dedicated pickleball center. The plan will replace six of the eight existing basketball courts, leaving only two for other sports, and install 16 permanent pickleball courts. Renovation is slated to begin in September and should wrap up by year‑end.

Why the Change?

  • New Tenant: The complex was leased to Spencer Doyle, who confirmed that conversion is in early stages and more details will follow once agreements are finalized.
  • Owner’s Vision: Speedway Properties maintains that the venue can already host up to 18 temporary pickleball courts when reconfigured.

Community Response

Pickleball Lincoln, a local nonprofit that promotes the sport and organizes leagues at Speedway, welcomed the development. President Joel Houston explained:

“We’ll have about the same number of courts we use now, but they will be permanent.”

Facility Overview

  • Size: 76,318 square feet
  • Previous Layout: Eight basketball courts (also usable as 12 volleyball courts)
  • Past Use: Players taped temporary pickleball courts

Looking Ahead

The transition reflects growing interest in pickleball across the city and aims to create consistent opportunities for players of all levels. With the new courts, Speedway Sports Complex will become a key destination for pickleball enthusiasts.
