Spotting Clouds with Satellites: A New Way

Imagine trying to spot clouds from space using special satellite measurements. This is what scientists did with PARASOL, a satellite that takes pictures from different angles. They used a smart computer program, called a neural network, to find clouds in these pictures. This program was trained on fake data and then tested on real data from PARASOL for a whole year. When they compared their results with other satellite data (MODIS), they found that their program found fewer clouds.

But it also made some mistakes, like saying clear skies were cloudy less often and saying cloudy skies were clear more often. They also used their cloud spotting method to help find tiny bits of dust and smoke in the air (aerosols). They found that their method worked about as well as the other method in keeping these results clean. This study shows that we can find clouds in satellite pictures without needing another special cloud-finding satellite.
