Springfield Teachers Take Charge: A New Era for Local Schools
In a significant move, the Springfield Federation of Teaching Professionals (SFTP) has become an independent union. This decision follows a unanimous vote by teachers to separate from the Ohio Education Association. The State Employment Relations Board (SERB) approved the change on October 16.
Why the Change?
Teachers sought greater autonomy to focus on the unique needs of their schools and students. By becoming independent, they aim to make quicker, more relevant decisions without external influence.
"This wasn't a decision made overnight. It took years of discussion and planning. We wanted a union that truly represents Springfield's teachers and students." — Tina Hartong, SFTP President
Stronger Partnerships Ahead
Independence allows teachers to collaborate more closely with the school district and the community. Tricia Williams, SFTP Vice President, believes this change will strengthen advocacy for students and foster a better partnership with the district.
A Bold Step Forward
This shift demonstrates teachers' commitment to shaping their future. By taking control, they ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met—ultimately improving learning conditions for students.
