Sprucing Up Forensic Training in Ukraine: Lessons from Abroad

Forensic experts in Ukraine play a crucial role in solving crimes, but their training and certification process needs a facelift. Right now, the system is overseen by various ministries and central executive bodies. By looking at how the US, UK, and some European Union countries do things, we can find some great ideas to make our system better. For instance, having a single regulatory act that outlines the procedures for training, internships, and certification would be a game-changer. This way, everyone would be on the same page, whether they work in state institutions, municipal ones, or are independent experts. Uniform standards for training would help solve the personnel shortage issue.

To really make a difference, we need to up our game in organizational, economic, teaching, and technical aspects. Modern information technologies can come in handy for assessing knowledge in a transparent and effective manner. Plus, we should raise the bar for who can become a forensic expert. There are some key issues that need to be addressed by law too. All in all, by learning from other countries and making these changes, we can greatly improve the quality of our forensic experts.
