In a move to boost literacy, a Staten Island elementary school is embracing a new approach to teaching reading. The school is part of a broader New York City initiative that focuses on the "science of reading." This method uses a free course to train teachers in evidence-based techniques.

A New Approach to Literacy

The program began in 2023, with Staten Island's District 31 leading the way. The goal is to build strong reading skills in students. PS 42 in Eltingville is a standout example of how the program is being implemented.

Training Teachers for Success

The school's staff completed a 10-hour course from The Reading Institute. This course covers key areas like:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Comprehension

It has helped educators understand the science behind reading and how it affects the brain.

A Common Language for Teachers

The course has created a common language among teachers. This shared understanding helps them apply the "science of reading" curriculum in all lessons. The principal of PS 42, Brian Sharkey, notes that everyone is involved and the results are positive.

Supporting All Teachers

The course supports both new and experienced teachers. Colette Elder, a first-grade teacher, says it has leveled the playing field. She explains that the course has given teachers a clear roadmap for teaching reading.

Helping Struggling Students

For students struggling with reading, teachers use the course to identify gaps. Fourth-grade teacher Jessica Ciaccio works backward to fill these gaps. This approach helps students build the skills they need to read at grade level.

Literacy Screeners for Progress Tracking

The program has also introduced literacy screeners. These screeners measure student progress three times a year. They help teachers intervene early if a student is falling behind.

Free Training for NYC Educators

The Reading Institute offers free seats for the course to NYC public school teachers. Over 2,600 educators completed the course in the 2024-2025 school year. Survey results show significant gains in knowledge among participants.
