Staying Vigilant: How Democracy Faces New Challenges
USATuesday, November 19, 2024
Misinformation is another alert. Official sources might spread false information like in Hungary. Trusted news outlets might face threats or shutdowns. Americans could find themselves less informed about their government’s actions.
The space for public dissent might shrink. The right to protest and organize is crucial for keeping leaders accountable. In repressive places, criticism often leads to harsh penalties. Bills targeting certain nonprofits under the guise of anti-terrorism have raised concerns.
An independent judiciary is also at risk. Leaders might use it to suppress enemies. Trump has hinted at misusing the Justice Department. When signs of autocracy appear, it’s vital to understand they are not new and can be resisted.
Supporting independent media and contacting officials are key steps. Small actions can signal what’s unacceptable and hold power accountable. Human rights organizations globally are ready to document and expose problematic policies.
Hopefully, the upcoming administration will choose democracy and human rights. But preparations must be made to defend these freedoms.
