Steve Bannon's Prison Release Date Stays Firm, Despite Attempts for Early Exit

Steve Bannon, a prominent figure in right-wing media and a former advisor to Donald Trump, will be freed from federal prison on October 29. This comes after he and his legal team tried to get him released earlier. The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) confirmed his release date won't be moved up, making him serve his full 120-day sentence for contempt of Congress. Bannon learned recently that he might qualify for home confinement under the First Step Act. However, the acting warden at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, where Bannon is currently imprisoned, said there wasn't enough time to arrange this. The prison officials pointed to a regional policy that requires at least 30 days for home confinement placements.

Bannon's original conviction in 2022 stemmed from his refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. Despite his ongoing appeal, he will complete his sentence as scheduled. During his time at FCI Danbury, Bannon has been working as an orderly in the prison library, managing the books. His release coincides with a crucial period in politics, as Bannon is a vocal supporter of Trump's reelection campaign. His popular podcast, “War Room, ” has continued without him, and he's likely to return as a prominent voice in political commentary. Despite his pending criminal fraud charges in New York, which he denies, Bannon is set for a trial in December.
