Remedy Entertainment is known for pushing boundaries in gaming. Their latest project, Firebreak, is a co-op first-person shooter that takes place in a world filled with supernatural threats. This game is set six years after the events of Control, another game by Remedy. In Firebreak, players take on the role of volunteer "first responders" who fight against the Hiss, a hostile supernatural force. These responders are trapped in the Oldest House, an extradimensional office building, along with the Hiss, which is always ready to strike.
The game's trailer, "Paper Chase, " shows a team of three players battling against a sentient swarm of Post-it notes and Hiss-possessed employees. The players use various improvised weapons and tools to clear out the infestation. These tools include an electrified pneumatic jump firearm, a high-pressure water cannon, and an explosive Object of Power that looks like a piggy bank. The trailer ends with the players facing off against a massive monster made of sticky notes, dubbed "Sticky Ricky. "
The game is designed to be accessible to all players, regardless of their skill level or how much time they have spent playing. It ditches the stress of daily check-ins, monthly grinds, and battle passes. Instead, it focuses on pick-up-and-play potential. Players can choose from various missions, called "jobs, " and select modifiers that determine the combat difficulty and the number of combat zones. They can also use Crisis Kits to switch between different play styles mid-job.
Firebreak also features Research Perks, which are abilities that modify the player's skills. These perks become stronger when paired with others of the same type. The game's director emphasized that playing Control is not necessary to enjoy Firebreak. The game is designed to be complementary to Control, not compulsory.
All post-launch downloadable content for Firebreak will be free for all owners. The game will also support cross-play, allowing players on different platforms to play together. While the exact details of the post-launch content are not yet known, it is likely that Firebreak will eventually bridge the gap between Control and its upcoming sequel, Control 2.
Firebreak is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X this summer. Fans of Remedy's previous games are excited to dive back into the paranatural world of the Remedy Connected Universe. The game promises a unique and thrilling experience, with its blend of supernatural threats and innovative gameplay mechanics.
