Storm Alert: Big Thunderheads Loom Over Southern Minnesota Tonight

Twin Cities, Minnesota, USAMonday, May 18, 2026
Southern Minnesota may enjoy a calm weekend, but a surge of strong thunderstorms is set to hit the area late Sunday night and carry through Monday morning. Weather forecasters have flagged this as a notable event, urging residents to keep an eye on the sky. The forecast places western, central and southern parts of the state at a Level 2 (Slight) risk for severe weather. A slightly higher Level 3 (Enhanced) threat looms over the far southwestern region, while northern Minnesota remains on a lower alert as fire crews tackle blazes near Breezy Point and Two Harbors.
Storms are expected to arrive around dinner time on Sunday, moving from west to east across the state. The Twin Cities metropolitan area could see intense showers and winds after 10 p. m. , but the worst of the activity should clear before Monday’s morning rush. Hail, wind gusts and a chance of an isolated tornado are the main concerns. At 3:30 p. m. , officials issued a Tornado Watch for Cottonwood and Jackson Counties that will last until 10 p. m. No such watch covers the Twin Cities metro at this time. Residents are advised to stay informed and prepare for possible power outages or road closures. Keeping windows shut, having emergency supplies ready, and monitoring local updates can help minimize the impact of these fast‑moving storms.
