Storm Alert: Strong Winds and Possible Tornadoes Hit Central North Carolina

Central NC, USAMonday, March 16, 2026
A powerful cold front is moving into central North Carolina, sparking a rare Level 4 severe weather warning. The forecast calls for widespread thunderstorms that could bring strong wind gusts and even a few long‑track tornadoes. Winds up to 40 mph are expected across the day—not just in storms—and power cuts could happen. A tornado watch covers areas around the Triangle.

The danger ends by sunset, but showers may linger until midnight. Daytime highs will reach the upper 60s to low 70s, while tonight’s cooler air will drop temperatures into the upper 20s and low 30s. Schools in many counties are closed or shifting to remote learning, with a few schools dismissing early.

Late Monday night, the storms should weaken as colder air arrives. Nighttime lows will fall to about 31 °F with west winds gusting up to 32 mph. A small chance of showers remains into early Tuesday, when temperatures will stay in the upper 40s to around 50 °F. The week’s warmth will return, with highs hitting the 70s by the weekend.
