"Storm of Lies: How Social Media is Muddying Hurricane Helene's Aftermath"
North Carolina, USASunday, October 6, 2024
Some lies involve FEMA’s response. Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that relief funds are being held back from Republican areas to help migrants. But he did something similar when he was president. David French, a conservative columnist, said that even when elected officials rebut these claims, people who follow certain leaders still believe the lies.
FEMA has tried to push back with a rumor control page, but it’s hard to fight against people who want to believe false information. Misleading AI-generated images are also making things worse on Facebook. A local news station even had to teach people how to spot these fake photos.
As North Carolina columnist Billy Ball put it, “We have a lot of crises in the U.S., but few are as significant as the information crisis.” People are lying to make us hate each other and for their own gain. With the election coming up, things might get even uglier.
