He’s not alone – many others are spreading misinformation, trying to make President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris look bad. But local officials and emergency responders are fighting back, saying these lies aren’t true. Kerry Giles from Rutherford County, NC, told CNN that debunking these rumors took up resources that could have been used for recovery efforts. She and her team had to issue a statement to clear up false claims about the government taking over towns and seizing property. Snopes and local media helped reduce some of the misinformation, but it’s still a big problem.

Some lies involve FEMA’s response. Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that relief funds are being held back from Republican areas to help migrants. But he did something similar when he was president. David French, a conservative columnist, said that even when elected officials rebut these claims, people who follow certain leaders still believe the lies.
