Stress and Burnout: Comparing Nurses in Psychiatric and Somatic Hospitals

Ever wondered if the type of hospital nurses work in affects their stress levels? A study took a close look at this question by comparing nurses from a psychiatric hospital and a regular (somatic) hospital in the same city. Both groups faced similar stress and burnout levels, showing that the type of hospital doesn't make a big difference. The study, which didn't name any names, included 379 nurses in total. Half were from the somatic hospital, and the other half from the psychiatric hospital. They used a test called the Mann-Whitney U test to find out if there were any big differences between the two groups. They also checked how things like age and how long nurses had been working affected their stress levels.

What did they find? Nurses in both hospitals had moderate levels of stress and burnout. Surprisingly, nurses in the somatic hospital had higher levels of some kinds of stress as they got older and more experienced. Meanwhile, psychiatric nurses felt more emotionally drained over time. So, what's the takeaway? It's not just the type of hospital that matters when it comes to stress. Things like age and experience play a role too.
