Student Activist's Unlawful Detention Raises Questions
South Louisiana Ice processing center, USAThursday, March 27, 2025
The university where Ozturk studies released a statement. They said they had no prior knowledge of the incident and did not share any information with federal authorities. Ozturk is pursuing her doctorate in philosophy and is also a Fulbright scholar. Her attorney had trouble contacting her and filed a petition to have her brought before the court.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the arrest. They called it an assault on free speech and academic freedom. A federal judge had ordered the government to notify the court about Ozturk's location and to give 48 hours' notice before moving her. However, the government did not update the court before her transfer to Louisiana was made public.
Ozturk had been involved in pro-Palestinian activism at her university. She co-wrote an op-ed criticizing the university's response to Israel's actions in Gaza. Earlier, DHS agents arrested another student involved in similar activism. This raises questions about the government's approach to political speech and activism on campuses.
