Student Activist's Unlawful Detention Raises Questions

After learning about Ozturk's transfer, a federal judge ordered the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to bring her to court by Thursday morning. Videos of the arrest showed plainclothes officers detaining Ozturk in broad daylight. The officers wore masks and took her to an unmarked car, which made the situation look like a kidnapping to onlookers. This incident is part of a larger pattern. Students involved in pro-Palestinian activism on campus have been facing arrests. This is seen as a crackdown on certain political speech in higher education. The Department of Homeland Security claimed that Ozturk supported Hamas, a group labeled as a terrorist organization. They stated that supporting such groups is grounds for visa termination.

Ozturk is pursuing her doctorate in philosophy and is also a Fulbright scholar. Her attorney had trouble contacting her and filed a petition to have her brought before the court.
