Sun's Heat Ends Comet ATLAS's Journey Early
SPACEWednesday, October 30, 2024
Scientists captured the melting moment with NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. Just 750, 000 miles from the sun's surface, Comet ATLAS disintegrated. It might have been big and bright, maybe even outshining Venus. But that close encounter with the sun was the end of its voyage.
These sungrazers are thought to be pieces of a larger comet that broke apart ages ago. While some can be seen from Earth, many don't survive the sun's intense heat. It's a sad end, but it's also a reminder of the powerful forces at work in our solar system.
