Superheroes and Pop Stars Join Forces for a New Animated Adventure

South KoreaMonday, July 27, 2026
SAMG Entertainment, known for the hit series Catch! Teenieping, and SM Entertainment have teamed up to create a fresh 3‑D cartoon. The partnership was announced on the 27th, with both firms signing a contract to produce an animated show tentatively called Superhero Idol Project. The series will feature 13 episodes, each about twenty minutes long, and is slated for a worldwide release on an OTT platform in 2028. The story will weave together the world‑building of popular K‑pop artists with a superhero plot, aiming at teens and young adults. This collaboration marks a shift from earlier joint efforts that mixed existing IPs with new products. Instead, the two companies are developing a brand from scratch, hoping to build an integrated business that covers music, concerts, management, video content and licensing. The goal is to merge the steady income from animation rights with the vibrant revenue streams of K‑pop fandoms. SAMG Entertainment began as SamG Animation in 2000 and has grown into a major player in children’s media. Its recent film, Heartsping: Love of Fairy Teenieping, attracted over a million viewers and earned a ministerial award in 2024. The studio reported revenues of ₩141. 2 billion and operating profit of ₩22. 6 billion in 2025.
SM Entertainment, founded in 1995 and celebrating thirty years last year, has produced many iconic K‑pop groups, from H. O. T. to the current generation of acts such as aespa and NCT WISH. In 2025, it posted consolidated revenue of ₩1. 1749 trillion and operating profit of ₩183 billion. The partnership has evolved through several stages. A strategic alliance signed in February 2025 led to joint merchandise releases in July, featuring Catch! Teenieping and Hearts to Hearts. October saw the launch of aespa‑ping items that reimagined the group as cartoon characters. December brought an NCT WISH soundtrack to Catch! Teenieping Season 6, and January introduced a character and song collaboration with Wishcat Season 2. Unlike previous projects that added one partner’s elements to an existing IP, this new deal focuses on creating a wholly original concept. The companies plan to capitalize on the recent global success of K‑pop themed animations, such as Netflix’s 2025 film K‑Pop: Demon Hunters, which drew 266 million views in its first 91 days. Kim Su‑hoon, CEO of SAMG Entertainment, noted that the demand for globally oriented animation infused with Korean culture has surged. He added that combining SAMG’s mass‑market animation reach with SM Entertainment’s powerful fan base will generate a high‑value revenue model across content, music and licensing.
