Supreme Court to Decide on Free Preventive Care Under Obamacare
USASaturday, January 11, 2025
The case doesn't threaten the whole ACA, but it could make some important preventive services expensive again. For instance, lung cancer screenings that could save thousands of lives each year might be affected. Other services like well-baby visits and vaccines aren't part of this case.
Studies show that making preventive care free has helped more people get these services and reduced care gaps in communities of color. But having to pay even a little can stop people from getting these services.
The US Solicitor General, Elizabeth Prelogar, said the appeals court's decision could hurt healthcare protections that have been in place for 14 years and help millions of Americans. The challengers, including a business with moral objections to some of the covered services, also want the Supreme Court to hear the case.
The case began in 2020 when the Trump administration defended the ACA's requirements. It's now in the hands of the Supreme Court, which will decide if these free preventive services can stay that way.
