Survival at Sea: Russian Man's Incredible 10-Week Journey in the Okhotsk

In a remarkable story, a Russian man named Mikhail Pichugin was rescued after spending 67 frigid days at sea. The Sea of Okhotsk, where he was adrift, is known for its harsh winters, freezing over from October to March. Mikhail's brother and nephew, unfortunately, did not make it. The family started their voyage on August 9, but they lost contact soon after. A fishing boat spotted them near Ust-Khayryuzovo on October 14.

The Sea of Okhotsk, enclosed by Russia's eastern Siberia and the Kamchatka Peninsula, is notoriously cold. Imagine surviving two months in those conditions! Mikhail's weight, around 220 lbs (100 kg), might have helped him endure the journey. Despite having enough food for only two weeks, he managed to last almost two months. Emergency responders found Mikhail on a small catamaran with a red flag, a harrowing sight. He's now being taken to a hospital in Magadan for treatment, in a state described as "emaciated but conscious." There's an ongoing investigation into the incident and possible safety violations related to the tragedy.
