Swarm systems, are not just about getting a job done. They can do something more. That something is called open-ended evolutionary dynamics. These systems can keep exploring and creating new things without an endpoint, and without anyone being in charge.

        Swarm Chemistry is a good example of what happens with these types of systems. It shows off the benefits of having different types of things working together in a swarm. One of the biggest advantages is the huge increase in possibilities when different types of things are involved. You also get to see patterns across different scales. The best part is that these things are often able to fix themselves and respond to their surroundings. These things make systems full of possibilities and continuously evolving.

        So, what are some examples? It's not just science that can benefit. Engineering and even art can be influenced by these new ideas, art and entertainment is not just about making something look nice but also about making something work in a new way.

        One way to think about it is like a team of detachable parts that can work together or act on its own.  Some examples of swarms are groups of robots that move together to accomplish something. The team of robots can be tested on very simple activities. However, as time goes on, robotic teams can be given more complex activities. By regularly offering the robots tasks of varying complexity, the bio-inspired system can improve. The concept of learning in swarms of robots is fascinating and unique to bio-inspired frameworks.

        When you think of open-ended evolutionary processes, the ability to never have a finish line can also be a challenge. Moving forward and keeping creation open-ended is crucial. This process makes this type of system completely unpredictable. Can the outcome ever be controlled? Humanity has been trying to recreate life, but it remains ever elusive. Many times themes have been about recreating life.  Life has always adapted accordingly. The most useful feature of open systems is their resilience.

        More research is needed. What other applications can we think of. Engineers are already using these ideas. What are the next steps in the future? This type of exploration is fantastic, but we need to continue to be a light for people and to continue to learn and help those in need. It is a fascinating way to think about these systems for various fields.

        When we think of swarms, we often think of the end product. We think of how pretty they can make the output. However, we do not need the end product. The end result is what is so fascinating, but the end result makes the systems interesting.
