Thai desserts are beloved for their sweet taste, but their sugar content can raise health concerns. A recent study measured how much these treats raise blood sugar levels. Researchers tested eight popular Thai desserts, chosen by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and found that despite their sweetness, not all desserts caused the same spike in blood sugar. They tracked the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) in healthy volunteers who ate these desserts. The results showed that while some desserts had a high GI and GL, others were surprisingly gentle on blood sugar levels.
The study included a variety of desserts, from the well-known mango sticky rice to lesser-known regional treats. Each dessert was evaluated based on its sugar content and how it affected blood sugar levels. Interestingly, desserts with a lower sugar content didn't always have a lower GI or GL, suggesting that the type of sugar matters too. This study doesn't mean you should avoid Thai desserts, but it's a reminder to choose wisely, especially if you're health-conscious.
