Swimming alert at two Pasadena beaches after high bacteria levels found

Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Anne Arundel County, USAFriday, June 19, 2026
Two popular swimming spots in Pasadena have been flagged for unsafe bacteria levels after recent water tests. Bayside Beach and Upper Magothy Beach now carry advisories, warning swimmers and water sports fans to stay out of the water. Officials blame high enterococci bacteria counts, which often rise after heavy storms when runoff carries pollutants into the water. The problem isn’t just local. Natural water bodies everywhere can get contaminated after rain, making it wise to check conditions before diving in. Health experts say swallowing polluted water can lead to stomach issues like diarrhea or vomiting. Open wounds are even riskier—the bacteria can enter the bloodstream, possibly causing serious infections like vibriosis.
Heavy rain isn’t the only culprit. Storm drains funnel everything from pet waste to oil into waterways, turning beaches into bacteria hotspots. Experts suggest waiting at least two days after heavy rain before swimming. If someone accidentally gets in the water, washing off with soap and hot water ASAP can reduce health risks. Fishing and crabbing are still safe if people handle their catch carefully. Wearing gloves and cooking seafood properly keeps dinner from turning into a health hazard. The county plans to retest the water on Monday, so beachgoers should check for updates online before planning a trip.
