FC Basel Cancels Kanye West Concert Over Controversial Past

FC Basel, the Swiss football club that hosts events at its St. Jakob‑Park stadium, has decided to cancel an upcoming Kanye West concert after a careful assessment of the request. The club explained that its values do not allow it to host an artist who has sparked controversy over past antisemitic remarks.

Earlier this month, the U.S. rapper—who also performs under the name Ye—apologized for his past statements, blaming them on untreated bipolar disorder and openly rejecting praise for Adolf Hitler. Despite this apology, several European venues have reacted by postponing or canceling his shows.

The Basel concert was scheduled for June, but the club’s spokesperson told Reuters that they had not moved forward with the event. “We considered the request, but after a thorough review we decided not to proceed because it would conflict with our principles,” the spokesperson said.

Other stadiums have followed suit. A Polish venue announced its own cancellation just days after Kanye postponed a French performance, and the United Kingdom had already barred him from traveling to headline a festival earlier this month.

These decisions reflect a broader trend of sports and entertainment arenas reevaluating the companies they partner with when an artist’s past comments clash with their stated values. Fans and critics alike watch how such cancellations may influence the future of live music events.
