Taiwan Prepares as Typhoon Krathon Looms
TaiwanWednesday, October 2, 2024
Kaohsiung, a city of 2.7 million, is in the typhoon's direct path. Authorities have evacuated over 2,500 residents from areas at risk of mudslides and landslides. Military helpers are transporting these folks to temporary shelters by truck. Most shops and eateries remain closed for a second day as people stock up on essentials like bread, meat, and instant noodles.
Kaohsiung's airport is also closed due to the storm, with all flights canceled. A Malaysian tourist, Chan Ka Who, found himself stranded there when his flight home was axed. As Typhoon Krathon nears, residents are warned to steer clear of flood- and landslide-prone areas like rivers, coastlines, and mountains. Kaohsiung's Mayor Chen Chi-mai has advised everyone to stay alert and keep tabs on weather updates.
