Taiwan Prepares for Powerful Typhoon Kong-rey

Taiwan is bracing for a massive storm. Super Typhoon Kong-rey, which has been strengthening rapidly, is heading towards the island. This typhoon is not your average storm. With winds reaching 240 kilometers per hour, it's as strong as a Category 4 Atlantic hurricane. The typhoon is expected to hit Taitung, a county in Taiwan's southeastern coast, early Thursday. By Wednesday night, the whole island is likely to be covered by its storm circle. That's a big deal because it means intense rain, flash flooding, and even landslides could follow. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration has already issued warnings. They're urging people to get ready. Waves could reach up to eight meters high when the typhoon makes landfall.

Taiwan's military and first responders are on standby. They're ready to assist with rescue and relief efforts. Even though flights and ferries are still running, things could change quickly. Taiwan usually handles typhoons well, but remote villages can be at risk. Earlier this month, Typhoon Krathon killed four people. This time, two outlying islands, Green Island and Orchid Island, have suspended work and classes. The Philippines has also been affected. The outer bands of Kong-rey, known there as Leon, have hit the northern parts of Luzon. After Tropical Storm Trami caused devastation, the country is on edge.
