Taiwan’s Coast Guard Sends Chinese Research Ship Packing Up
Taiwan Coast Guard Chases Chinese Research Vessel from Sensitive Waters
The Taiwan coast guard reports it has successfully chased the Tongji, a one‑year‑old Chinese research vessel, away from waters near the island’s southern tip. The ship was spotted 29 nautical miles southeast of Taiwan, just outside the country’s restricted zone.
Suspicious Activity
Taiwanese officers observed Tongji lowering ropes into the sea, presumably to deploy scientific instruments for a survey that Taiwan claims is illegal.Coast Guard Response
A Taiwanese coast guard vessel moved close enough to create a wake that interfered with Tongji. It also sent messages demanding the vessel leave immediately and cease its activities. After retrieving its equipment, Tongji turned back toward the open ocean.
Continued Surveillance
Taiwanese officials kept watch on Tongji until Monday, when it finally departed. They accuse China of repeatedly sending ships that ignore international law and employ “grey zone” tactics to pressure Taipei, urging China to end these provocative moves.Chinese State Media’s Description
Chinese media describe Tongji as a versatile ship capable of operating in all weather, carrying remote‑controlled vehicles and laboratories, and even laying pipelines. The vessel is intended for marine geology, oceanography, chemistry, biology, and offshore engineering projects.Taiwan’s Stance
Despite the civilian claims, Taiwan views any such activity near its waters as a threat. The incident is part of a broader pattern in which China, asserting Taiwan as its own territory, conducts regular military and non‑military operations around the island. Taipei insists these actions undermine its sovereignty and stability.
