“Talking Cow Health: Dairy Farmers and Vets Agree to Disagree”
Friday, December 27, 2024
Between 2019 and 2021, researchers checked in with 88 dairy farmers and their vets from farms with cow herds ranging from 105 to a whopping 1291. They asked both parties about their communication during udder health consultations. Turns out, there's a bit of a mismatch. The vet's focus often doesn't line up with what the farmer wants.
When farmers and vets talk udder health more frequently and spot problems early, they see a lower bulk tank somatic cell count (BTSCC). But here’s the twist: overall cooperation between farmers and vets seems to lead to a higher BTSCC. This could mean that while frequent chats help, something in the broader cooperation might be missing the mark.
