Tallahassee Can Build Its Own Bright Future

Greenville, South Carolina, USAMonday, July 6, 2026

Tallahassee boasts the buildings, schools, and parks that many cities need to grow. The real challenge is aligning city leaders, businesses, universities, and the state around a shared vision.

A Lesson from Greenville

When I walked through Greenville, South Carolina, with my family, the town’s lively streets and green spaces made a clear point: success comes when people combine hard tools with a common vision.

In 2019, I joined a group of Tallahassee leaders on a trip to Greenville. We saw that the city’s growth was not just about attracting big names like BMW or Michelin, but about years of cooperation among local governments, private firms, and state agencies. That partnership turned Greenville into a thriving downtown that pulls in more talent and money—a self‑reinforcing cycle.

Tallahassee’s Current Landscape

  • Hardware: Two major universities, a top research lab (National High Magnetic Field Laboratory), parks (Cascades), and a budding startup scene.
  • Software: Coordination that turns these assets into a powerful engine for growth.

A new city manager is about to be hired, and local elections are coming up. These moments give the city a chance to decide where it wants to be in ten or twenty years, especially as artificial intelligence reshapes the job market.

The Path Forward

  1. Adopt Greenville’s model: Bring together all resources so that economic strength and quality of life reinforce each other.
  2. Align institutions, funds, and ideas: Companies need skilled workers; skilled workers want places that feel alive and welcoming.
  3. Invest thoughtfully: Examples like the partnership between the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and Danfoss, as well as projects on Gaines Street, show that targeted investments can spark private interest while enhancing community pride.

The Goal

Make Tallahassee a place where families, students, and businesses all feel proud. It won’t happen overnight, but with deliberate alignment of institutions, funds, and ideas, the city can turn its potential into reality.
