Target Ditches DEI Programs to Adapt to Shifting Society

This is a move that aligns with other big brands like Walmart, who are also rethinking their DEI strategies. The company was planning to end their racial program this year anyway, which aimed to improve the careers of Black employees and the shopping experience for Black customers. They also planned to hire and promote more women and people from racial minorities.

Target has been praised for supporting LGBTQ+ and Black rights, but they say they need to keep up with how society is changing. Some conservative groups and even the White House have been criticizing DEI initiatives, saying they're unfair. Lately, big companies like Ford and John Deere have been scaling back too. Target also plans to stop participating in surveys like the Human Rights Campaign’s index. They want to make sure their partnerships help their business goals directly. Some companies are still pushing forward with their DEI plans, like Apple and JPMorgan. Target, though, has a history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights. In 2023, they removed some Pride Month items after customer complaints. It's clear Target is trying to avoid angering conservative customers.
