Tata Steel Faces Legal Action Over Dutch Plant Pollution

IJmuiden, NetherlandsWednesday, July 8, 2026

Prosecutors in the Netherlands have opened a criminal investigation targeting Tata Steel’s large facility in IJmuiden, located on the coast west of Amsterdam. The inquiry points to serious shortcomings in the company’s efforts to curb harmful emissions and suggests that its maintenance of a heavily polluting coke oven was insufficient. Authorities also claim the plant operated without the necessary permits.

Tata Steel’s Dutch branch has denied these allegations, arguing that it has already implemented significant upgrades to reduce pollution. The company believes the legal action is unwarranted, citing a small number of incidents that have been addressed through improvements. It also questions whether Dutch executives will face personal charges.

The IJmuiden site ranks among the country’s biggest sources of greenhouse gases. Studies commissioned by government bodies link the plant to various health issues in the surrounding area. While Tata Steel maintains that its emissions stay within legal limits, regulators have warned that the coke oven could be shut down in 2024 if it continues to violate environmental rules.

A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for November 20 at the Amsterdam district court. The case will examine whether the company’s practices meet Dutch environmental standards and if further penalties are justified.
