Teachers in Marblehead Take a Stand: A Closer Look at Stalled Contract Negotiations

The Marblehead Education Association (MEA) has decided to make a bold move in their negotiations for a new collective-bargaining agreement. They have announced that teachers will only work the hours and responsibilities outlined in their contract, effectively halting any extra activities like after-school help or serving on committees. This decision comes after the latest negotiation session with the School Committee ended in frustration when the Committee rejected MEA's wage proposals. The teachers are implementing a "work to rule" policy, which means they will stop all voluntary work on certain school days and enter their schools at the exact start time as per their contract. They will also hold informational pickets outside of school. Jonathan Heller, co-President of the MEA, explained that they know this action will cause some disruption but feel they can't let students and families down any longer. The MEA is pushing for fair funding for schools, claiming the School Committee isn’t advocating strongly enough for it.

The School Committee has a different viewpoint. They argue that the MEA's proposal would cost taxpayers an additional $9.6 million over four years and could lead to significant staff reductions or require a 9% tax override. However, the MEA disputes this, stating that the proposed increase would only cover pay raises for professional staff, not other bargaining units. This situation has been brewing since August when the previous collective-bargaining agreement expired. The School Committee and its attorney have been accused of delaying negotiations and using stall tactics. In response, the MEA is stepping up their protests to pressure the Committee into negotiating in good faith and prioritizing educators and students in Marblehead.
